BC Says New Reduction of Service Slated for BC Rail Lines

British Columbia Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon says there will be no reduction of service on the BC Rail line between Prince George and North Vancouver. The New Democrats say CN -- which now manages the line -- has told its unions the number of freight trains will be reduced from three a day to just one. Falcon says the move won't affect overall freight service because the same volume of freight will be moved despite having fewer trips. He says that's exactly the kind of efficiency one would expect from a private sector operator. NDP leader Carole James says more than 100 jobs at BC Rail will be lost as a result of CN's decision to scale back the number of trains. She says the move flies in the face of promises made by the Liberal government regarding the service that could be expected under the deal to sell BC Rail to CN.
