MBTA Plans $40M in Upgrades to Fairmount Line

The MBTA will spend $40 million during the next several months to rebuild dilapidated stations and bridges along the Fairmount Commuter Rail Line in Boston, Massachusetts, a long-suffering service that is scarcely used by city residents. "We still rely on buses," said Lee Matsueda of the Four Corners Action Coalition. "We've made a lot of noise over the years and we need to continue to apply that pressure . . . to make sure new stations are constructed." T officials will join city and state leaders today to break ground on renovations to the Uphams Corner Station - the first of several projects that will also rebuild the Morton Street Station and several bridges along the line. The 9-mile Fairmount Line runs between South Station and Readville and is the only rail service for parts of Mattapan, Dorchester and Roxbury. Still, most residents in those neighborhoods don't use the line because stations are dilapidated and too far apart. Matsueda and other community activists are pushing the T and Gov. Mitt Romney to release more than $43 million appropriated by the Legislature to build four additional stations on the line. Those stations - at Newmarket, Four Corners, Talbot Avenue and Blue Hill Avenue - are included in the T's long-term plans, but have not received financial backing. "The improvements along the Fairmount Line are getting a warm reception from the Romney administration," T General Manager Michael Mulhern said yesterday. "I'm very optimistic some state bond funds will become available."
