BNSF Grain Train Derailment Reported in Idaho

A derailment late Monday night has affected BNSF's northern United States mainline in Elmira, Idaho at the junction of Bonner and Boundary Counties.

According to railroad reports, a loaded grain train originating in Wolf Point, Montana and bound for Kalama, Washington, saw thirteen cars leave the rails in a general pile-up within the town limits of Elmira at 23:30 PST. The train, BNSF symbol G-WOMKAL1-14, consisted of three locomotives and 105 cars. There were no hazardous material cars in the consist and luckily no injuries reported.

The cause of the derailment has not been established.

About 40 trains use the rails each day, according to BNSF spokesman Gus Melonas.

Amtrak was busing passengers on its Empire Builder train between Libby, Montana, and Spokane, Washington.

The current estimate for reopening the main track is 01:00 PST April, 19.
