International Railroad Discussion > An hour at Yangon Central station

Arrived back in Yangon this afternoon from Mawlamyine, Hpa An and Golden Rock and, as luck would have it, our hotel, the Sule Shangri-la, was a stones throw from Central Station, so over I went for a mooch about.

There's a stuffed 4-6-4T of clearly British origins, but no makers plate.

As we arrived a long string of cars was being switched out of the car servicing facility, I guessed it would form the 17:00 to Mandalay (arr 07:30 tomorrow). It backed in to platform 1. This is a lower class car.

And this is upper class. In total the train consisted of 18 cars, including one upper class sleeper, a restaurant car and a baggage car.

The main station is controlled by an elderly Westinghouse Brake & Signal Company installation, the two aspect signals wouldn't look out of place on London Underground.

This is the restaurant car of the departing Mandalay train.

One of the numerous commuter trains pulls in on platform 3. The loco is from French builder Alstom.

Very entertaining way of spending an hour in the late afternoon. Temperature was a sapping 33C!

The Japanese have shipped a number of DMU types to Myanmar in recent years, re gauged from 42" to 1M. These are from the KiHa 40 series.

Not yet, we're on the day train to Mandalay tomorrow, back in Yangon on Saturday, hope to ride part of it then.
