Those are reasonably long trains, longer than the ones I saw on the east side of the South Island in Kaikoura and in Dunedin (Kaikoura, at least, is now unfortunately closed until the earthquake damage is fixed).  Those trains were reasonably frequent, but apparently not as frequent as on the North Island near Auckland.  Is this stretch as busy as it looks?

Hi Bob,
Between Auckland and Hamilton, there is around 30-40 trains aday, with the coal train, It  does 3 trips a
day to the steel mill when required from Huntly. There is up to 12 MP trains (Metro Port) which is a inland port for Tauranga.
Plus all the main trunk trains, 5-6 each way five days a week, plus weekend trains.all adds up.

Don't need to. The gates reach all the way across the road, so driving around them is not really possible.

Nice sequences, I see the intermodal is a mixture of 60' and 40' flats.

Too bad we can't do that here in the States.

We do it here all of the time. "Quiet Zone" crossings have to have 4 quadrant gates and centre islands. After it's certified, no more horns.

In my part of the West the quiet zone is much different. Trains dont blow but the fixed horn at the crossing sure does and there are no center islands etc..  Normal gate arrangement.

The crossings you refer to make up a very, very small percentage of gated crossings here in the United States.
