Passenger Trains > SP 1785 in the clear for 11 & 14 at Woodburn, ORDate: 05/21/16 02:13 SP 1785 in the clear for 11 & 14 at Woodburn, OR Author: railscenes Tried the iPhone on video today while checking on the 2-6-0 SP 1785 in the wye in downtown Woodburn, OR May 20, 2016. Unfortunately the iPhone does not have an "app" for a tri-pod. The 1785 is still in good condition due to the on-going care of Frank Sheer. Frank also has the SP type double lower quadrant semaphore signal working. So the signal is displaying stop for a double meet with both the LA bound and Seattle bound Coast Starlight. When 11 & 14 are near on time they have a meet a few miles south of Woodburn at Gervais, OR.
The meet was routine. Both trains had the Santa Fe Hi-Level Lounge car, except the northbound Starlight had a private car named Cyrus K. Holliday but lettered for Soo Line. What is the story on that? It's a former Soo Line coach, built 1921, and later converted to a business car by that railroad. It passed into private ownership, eventually going to San Diego and owned by the corporate persona of the early San Diego pioneering and banking family, the Seftons. They named the car for "Colonel" Holliday who was one of the co-founders of Topeka, Kansas and wrote the charter for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. There is a BNSF business car named "Cyrus K, Holliday" but it is inactive, parked at BNSF headquarters in Ft. Worth, TX. and used as meeting rooms and for special events.
