My ministerial career started right about the time these went into service, and I used them for part of my commute from my student parish (Milwaukee) to my seminary (Hyde Park).in '71 and '72.

At the end of this year, I will retire just like the Highliners did today.

Amazing that anything serves in the same way for 45 years any more.  Well done, IC Highliners, and thanks for all the good rides.

Even more amazing are the stainless steel cars, originated by The Budd Company, many of which continue to operate reliably in commuter and intercity service, most notably VIA's transcontinental Canadian. Some of this fleet is approaching its 70th year in service.

University Park, IL after the last run of the old Metra Highliner cars. They allowed folks to cross the tracks for photos.

Sheesh,  I remember photographing them around Homewood when brand new.  Time flies when you're havin' fun.

130 cars from St. Louis Car.  30 more to replace the remaining 1926 cars came from Bombardier as St. Louis was gone by then.

Someone correct me if I am wrong but I think these were the last full size non stainless steel passenger cars built in the US.

Has anyone seen any being scrapped?  If so, where?

Did they prefer the older St Louis cars over the Bombardier ?

They who?  The people that drove them or the people that fix them?
