Another delay filled Hiawatha day (w/ Private Cars)
Author: sethamtrak

Today was another eventful afternoon spent waiting on Number 7 which I was told had two Privates going to MSP. I arrived at 2:30 for the supposed 2:35 arrival to find out 7 would be two hours late. That would put 7 into Glenview at 4:35pm. Meanwhile while waiting a loaded CP Oil train went south towards A5 and did a reverse move to access the BRC. Amtrak Hiawatha 337 (NB) arrived and departed on the advertised at 3:37pm. It turns out that 335 still had not arrived in the depot in Milwaukee by 3:30pm and was then an hour behind schedule. Amtrak 8 was only about 7min late and departed Milwaukee at 2:14pm. I then pulled up ATCS to find that the KK Bridge was locked and stuck in the UP position due to a mechanical failure. It would remain that way until 5:45. Amtrak 8 was sitting on the N side of the "KK Bridge" and Amtrak Hiawatha 335 was on the other. Amtrak 335 and 337 both piled up around MKE airport. By this time 335 should have turned and been back in Glenview at 4:00pm. This train 338 as well as the CHI turn (339) were cancelled. Amtrak 337 turned like usual to 340 (1.5 hours late) and then 341 (while 335 became 342 with 338/339 elated). After going home and coming back to Glenview 7 still had not come and neither 8. 7 finally went through Morton Grove around 6:30PM (4 hours late due to two sleepers needing to be swapped out). 7 ended up having the Pacific Sunset, Superdome and Skytop Lounge on the rear. Amtrak 8 then came by Morton Grove at 6:57pm (3.5 down due to the bridge failure in MKE). Seth then called it quits...

Attached is a quick vid of the 4 hour late Westbound Number 7 with 3 Private Cars on the rear...

Thanks for reading! Seth- (www.youtube.com/user/sethamtrak)

Neat catch with the skytop on the rear. CP sure seems to be running a few more trains via A5 lately.

And exactly why was No. 7 two hours late out of Chicago? (or did it lose all that tmie in the short distance between Chicago and Glenview).  Assume another case of that excellent Chicago staff not getting the train out on time.

The train left Chicago over 4 hours late. The Eastbound Builder Number 8 lost over 3 hours due to the bridge being stuck in the up position just outside Milwaukee. Two diffenent causes to the delays yesterday.

Neat video.  Should have left the camera roll at least a few more seconds, though.

Dramatic video. Does it look like the door is open on the baggage car? Seems pretty fast to be leaving that open.
