North to Big Moose on the Adirondack Scenic Railroad!
Author: ut-1

Here we have the Adirondack Scenic Railroad making its 128 mile round-trip run from Utica, NY to Big Moose on August 8, 2015.

We start as the train leaves Utica, catch it barreling through Trenton, then follow it farther northwards through Remsen, past Snow Junction, then into Thendara (Old Forge) where it meets the southbound from Carter Station and finally capture its arrival into Big Moose, the highest point on New York Central's Adirondack Division.

Purely by luck, the nifty PA announcement heralding the train's arrival in Thendara is recorded as well.

Lake Placid, the line's northern terminus, lies 77 miles north of Big Moose. New York state's current plan calls for the rehab of Adirondack's tracks to Tupper Lake, 43 miles north of Big Moose, but for the removal of the final 34 miles of track from Tupper Lake to Lake Placid.

You guessed it: plans call for a trail to replace the rails.

The Adirondack presently operates passenger service on the far northern end of the line, from Saranac Lake to Lake Placid.

There is no regularly scheduled passenger service from Big Moose to Saranac Lake, although the line is suitable for equipment moves.

wonderful - thank you - have ridden the current version to Thendera several times, the full route to Lake Placid both at the the of the Olympics and earlier in the 1950's. Amazing to realize this line had direct sleeping car service from NYG well into the 1960's.

Dummies, why can't the trail and railroad share the right of way to Lake Placid... They will be sorry if they rip it out someday.
