Branch Line Thunder on the MA&N
Author: ut-1

Mohawk, Adirondack & Northern's Utica, NY line runs from Utica to Lyons Falls, approx 45 miles to the north. This route was once part of New York Central's St Lawrence Division.

Today, the line is lightly used for freight purposes, with only one customer in Boonville, approx 35 miles north of Utica. However, the Adirondack Scenic uses appox 21 miles of the line to Remsen, where it enters home rails at Snow Jct.

For the last year or so, the MA&N has been storing covered hoppers north of Boonville. Lots of them.

Just by luck, this morning I caught MA&N running over thirty hoppers north to Boonville. Three engines, each having a different paint scheme, provided the power. This was a big train, a very big train, compared to the usual  train size today on this branch.

As the train neared Boonville, the crew put the lead two engines into a siding. The remaining engine was easily able to move the train as the grade was slight. Once the train cleared the siding, the other two engines backed up, got back on the main and coupled on. Shortly afterwards, the lead engine went into a siding and the shove began in earnest.

The picture shows the train a few miles north of Boonville.

It sucks that it's just storage cars but a 3 MLW/Alco combo on the MA&N is awesome!
