P&W GRWO Meets Pan Am LCT at Gardner 08/28/15
Author: JPB

On Friday afternoon 8/28/15, P&W Worcester - Gardner turn was was assembling train GRWO of loaded autoracks at Pan Am Southern's Gardner yard as Pan Am's eb Loaded Coal Train was climbing the grade eastward. I thought this video would be very dramatic with 12,000 horsepower lugging 10,000 tons up hill but not so much. It turns out the LCT crew was going to bail off at Gardner as they had departed Mechanicvlle area some 8+ hours earlier. There aren't any good parking sidings to use east of Gardner due to MBTA track work/traffic and a gaggle of PAR freights were already occupying track at Fitchburg and Graniteville plus 23K was doubling in Ayer so this was as far as this was crew was going. Three hours later, a new crew would arrive only to wait an hour or so for 23K to clear the single track between Fitchburg and Gardner.

Photo 1 shows 23K tip-toeing westward through Westminster across new CPF-335 interlocking that will connect the MBTA's new layover yard lead, main track 2, and the future station track 3.

Photo 2 shows GRWO heading under Union St in S Gardner. P&W trains generally move with a greater sense of urgency on their superior track than do Pan Am freights on their non-subsidized track.
