N&W 611, Day two of "The Roanoker"
Author: tehachapi-dave

Good Morning,

Today we return to last spring, as N&W 611 leads excursions out of Greensboro, NC to Roanoke, VA.  The weekend was filled with great stack talk from the venerable J, and impressive scenes provided by the former Southern Railway, and Virginian Railway mainlines.  Enjoy!

Wonderful filming, and just great sounds and images!

As a steam buff from the UK I have a few questions.

1.Is there a speed limit on such trains - if so what is it? I note the train is heavy (20 cars plus water tender) and I wondered if the rather slow speed was a result of that alone.

2. What are the rules about open windows at vestibule ends? I didn't see any people hanging out, which is the main activity on UK steam specials. I remember that one of the greatest things about N American trains was the large vestibule window which could swing back like a stable door. Have these now been banned by safety nuts?

3. How is the aircon powered? I don't see any source of head end power.

Many thanks, Paul from London

NS has a 40 MPH max speed for all steam excursions.

NS does NOT allow any open windows nor open vestibule doors during movements.

Some cars are self powered, but most are powered by 480 volt three phase HEP (Head End Power). There is a diesel powered HEP "power car" in the train, as you can hear the roar when it passes.
