Nothing quite like the sound of a perfectly square steam engine at speed under load!

Thanks, Mary!

Bless you Mary!  Lord I miss that lady and sitting in my office on the right side.  Do you have a date on that?  It was a shakedown run of some sort, but I don't remember when.

As awesome as the videos are, 1522 almost always managed to overpower sound equipment.  If you were trackside, the sound waves would really pound you.
I grew up trackside during WWII standing on the grade coming out of Lindenwood and watched many freights rattling windows  waiting to see my Dad one one of them running.  Awesome times.
My fireman and I got off 1522 at Newburg and turned her over to the next crew WB about midnight, running very late because of flooding.  We drove up Dixon Hill about halfway and waited.  It was dead still on the overpass and we could hear her whistle off at Newburg.  It took about ten minutes before she came into view on a curve below us.  The throb of the burner could be felt for several minutes and the show as absolutely beautiful.  I'll never forget that.

I remember waiting to go on duty at Texas State Railroad during the first Polar Express and listening to the 28 working westbound from Dean Wright uphill to Palestine. It was just after sundown on a chilly night. I had made that stack music coming up that hill many times, but it was one of the few times I could actually sit back and enjoy it.
