Indeed! I saw some live steamers at Griffith Park back in the early 60s...
Those sounded like like pop-pop-pop machines. This is a real engine!

(...and a near spin... Fantastic!)

You have not been there recently, like during our Spring Meet. Lots of steamers slugging it out up the 3% hill.

This has to be one of the first LE Northerns built.  Seymour Johnson's 4751 I believe is credited as being the first.  Would be curious know where RLS' Northern falls in age.

Was running in the park when the club was formed.  Saturday was actually the 50th anniversary

The "HUNTER" 4-8-4 at RLS was built by Joe Hunter, a local Riverside industrialist.  I operated that locomotive in December-1973.
My wife Suzie (only married six months that same December) operated the Hunter engine as well.  She was absolutely thrilled.
Her instructor was pioneer Live Steamer "Dick Bagley"...  After a few loops, she was on her own, like a Pro !!
I caught the event on Super-8 movies !

Track Guy - I believe the Hunter engine number tells the story "5057", started in 1950, completed in 1957.
(Rich, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong)

Brook, thanks for that insight. The numbers do make sense. KRK, nice shot of the Casford's 2900 series ATSF 4-8-4.

Great sounding engine. I'm not surprised there was a little slip as the train looked to have some "heavy tonnage". One too many Big Macs for some I guess......
