Reading and Northern 2102 leaves the engine house

Reading and Northern 2102 leaves the engine house for a test run to Tamaqua and back with CEO Andy Muller at the Throttle.

It is always a great pleasure for me to see any of the Reading Railroad T-1's under steam and running.  That's a great locomotive and the Reading & Northern have done a tremendous job with their restoration and operation of the 2102.

Surprised to see a light engine.  Thought surely there would be a couple coaches or a few hoppers tacked on for easier braking.

Congrats to Andy Muller and his team for doing a great job showcasing steam. I'm looking forward to riding behind her on June 22 and am confident that she'll put on a heck of a show as always.

I agree with those that wonder why no cars to do the braking?
Its a good habit to get into, especially if you own the railroad ...

The heavier the cars, the better.. After all, it's a 400-ton engine....
That can be hard, on the driver tires.
Braking using 'empties' is kind of pointless...their wheels will lock
and slide...in a hard-stop, if a situation pops up!

You run the risk of overheating the driver tires --- "a bad thing".

Oh well,  it ain't my railroad...
It ain't my engine.
It ain't my money.

So what did the railroads do back in the steam era to mitigate this? Say, for example, Pennsylvania RR helpers dropping back down to Altoona after a push up to Gallitzin?

>mdThe engine only was running at 10 MPH. I think The Reading & Northern  and the owner know all about what you said. . The R&N organization has been operating steam engines since the 1980's.. They know what they are doing, especially Mr Andrew Muller who is CEO and Owner of the R&N. Many of his early engineers who have since passed away were engineers operating Steam for the former READING railroad. They taught the young guys the ropes.Charley Kachel, Bob Rothermal and Andy Andrews to name just a few.  I conducted for them all when the R&N was the old Blue Mt. & Reading.

The advantage with a couple of 'brakers" is that it gives you options.
If you want to 10pm, that's good...
Wth options, your ability to adapt is easier.
Let the brake shoes on the cars take the heat!

Its a preference 'thing'.
If you have the chance to take 'brakes' along, why not do it?

I also wonder what 'work' they had done, that needed a slow test-run?
